Our public transport system makes the West Midlands one of the best-connected regions in the UK:

  • An extensive, radial regional railway network with 185 stations
  • A state-of-the-art light rail system connects Birmingham and Wolverhampton (the Midland Metro)
  • A highly developed bus service runs 24 hours a day in the major conurbations

At the heart of the UK's train network, travelling locally and nationally is easy:

  • Birmingham's New Street Station is the UK's main national rail interchange, serving over 31 million people every year
  • The West Coast Line provides a fast convenient link to London from Wolverhampton, Birmingham, Coventry and Rugby
  • Birmingham to London is 90 minutes by train, with services running every 30 minutes
  • Commuters and leisure users have 26 local rail lines providing fast, convenient travel
  • West Midlands commuting costs compare very favourably with other locations and are significantly cheaper than in London and the South East

Access to international travel is also excellent:

  • The region has two international airports. Birmingham International Airport offers flights from 50 airlines to 100 destinations across Europe, North America, the Middle East and the Indian sub-continent
  • For in-bound travellers, Birmingham International offers very convenient access to the rest of the UK. It is located between two motorways and is the only airport in the country with a mainline railway station on-site
  • Coventry Airport offers low cost flights to European cities through low cost airline Thomsonfly
