Müller Loves the West Midlands
It's no wonder yogurt giant, Müller Dairy, chose love as the theme of its latest advertising campaign. UK consumers can't get enough of its yogurts and chilled pot desserts. From its state-of-the-art factory in the West Midlands, Müller produces a staggering 1,400,000,000 pots of yogurt and desserts each year. It is now the UK's favourite brand and three times the size of its nearest rival.
Managing Director of Müller Dairy UK, Ken Wood acknowledges the role that the West Midlands has played in the company's phenomenal success:
"Market Drayton in the West Midlands is the perfect location for Müller. It is within a 50 mile radius of 30% of the UK's milk production. And, as a traditional dairy area, a pool of skilled labour is on the doorstep. It is also the halfway point for delivery of the finished product throughout the UK and a lovely part of the countryside to live and work."
Logistically, the West Midlands' excellent road, rail and air links are crucial. Every day, 33 tanker loads bring up to 650,000 litres of milk to the Müller factory. Speed is a key factor - rapid delivery means fresh milk can be converted into yogurt within 24 hours. Thirty seven thousand trucks fill up at the loading bay each year, clocking up 9,000,000 miles to ensure that customers across the UK and Republic of Ireland can enjoy the taste of Müller yogurts and Müllerice whenever they like.
In addition to milk, around 37,000 tonnes of fruit are used in the Müller factory each year. Many of the suppliers are local but more exotic fruit is air freighted from all four corners of the world, including strawberries from Poland, Turkey, Mexico and Argentina, and cherries from Serbia and Turkey.
The scale of Müller's operation in the UK is staggering. Its factory is one of the most high-tech dairies in Europe, employing in excess of 1,000 people. Since 1991, the company has invested £125m in the region, and recently announced a further £10m expansion to create a new facility to manufacture plastic bottles for its Vitality Probiotic Yogurt drink.
