Sector Strengths:

  • Fuel Cell Technologies - the region is home to a high concentration of companies and research organisations focused on fuel cell technologies and products
  • Biomass Technologies - the region is taking a lead role in the delivery of two national innovation projects for biomass, based on technologies developed in the West Midlands
  • Wind Energy - the region has a highly developed wind energy supply chain
  • Resource Recovery - the region has a strong base of resource recovery industries, ranging from energy and waste operations through to large scale recycling activities
  • There is a growing Environmental Technologies Cluster which, against a backdrop of increasing legislation, offers support and opportunities for industry networking

Sector Research & Development:

  • The Technology Innovation Centre at the University of Central England is a collaborative hub of academics and businesses, active in developing a supply chain for renewable transport fuels
  • Aston University is the home of PyNe - the Biomass Pyrolysis Network - a global group of active researchers and developers of fast pyrolysis
  • Warwick University is supporting collaborative development of advanced electrical machines for renewable generation with regional companies in a DTI supported programme
  • National Industrial Symbiosis Programme (NISP). NISP is the first industrial symbiosis initiative in the world to be launched on a national scale
